Old houses do tend to get a bit drafty when you demolish an entire left wing.

To the surprise of absolutely no one who’s paid attention to the news ever, the current regime is talking about reinstituting the draft to supply soldiers for their war in Iran.

Yeah, really.

No, really:

To which Marjorie Taylor Greene, of all people, responded:

“How about the answer is NO DRAFT AND NO BOOTS ON THE GROUND because we campaigned on NO MORE FOREIGN WARS OR REGIME CHANGE!!! Liars every single one of them! Not my son, over my dead body!!!!!”

I genuinely hate how this coup is making MTG the front person for the sanest side of the Republican Party. How bad do you have to be to make MTG of all people look good?

Apparently, this bad.

This is a deeply, deeply stupid idea.

Take a country that’s already pissed off enough of its citizens that I am frankly surprised that we haven’t seen any federal buildings burned to the ground yet.

Next, start an illegal war on the other side of the planet in support of a country that’s already widely disliked here for its genocidal tendencies.

Then, try to tell our citizens that they have to go or send their children to go fight that war for you.

How long do you think it would be before the shooting starts here?

30 seconds? Maybe whole minute?

But beyond just whether this would be the last straw in breaking the republic, conscription of any kind is just flat-out wrong.

Conscript armies are not consistent with democratic States or free societies.

I have discussed this here before:

TLDR version: If you want a war, hold a vote; if the war wins that vote, conscript an army from the pool of citizens that voted for it.

That’s the only way to hold a war that’s consistent with the alleged values of a free society or a democratic State.

Anything less democratic than that should be resisted with extreme prejudice.
