
Since I didn’t do a Labor Day post yesterday, because reasons, you should read Jonathan Larson‘s over at The Fucking News.
What Labor Means Today.
While I don’t agree with every little thing he says in it, it’s very good and (as always with Larson) very well-written.
He discusses, and critiques, the modern U.S. idea of what “labor” means and what it should mean mostly by contrasting the views of Howard Lutnick with John Maynard Keynes.
I particularly liked his summary of Keynes’ thesis in “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren” as:
In 2025 American English, that means people were already losing jobs because we’d run out of bullshit to make people do. There literally wasn’t enough shit-doing to fully occupy the masses.
Keynes was not at his predictive best in that essay.
