If lying to a cop is illegal, lying as a cop should be too.
That seems only fair?
But more importantly than fair, it’s rational.
Because we should hold anyone who wields a State power to higher standards than we have for just any old citizen.
We need them to be more trustworthy.
Because they have more power.
And power famously corrupts.
So it needs to be granted as little as possible, and controlled and tracked in how it’s used.
And it should only be entrusted to the best of us.
As opposed to how it’s historically been, with power going to only the worst people and exercised with wanton abandon secure in the knowledge that there would be no consequences for its misuse.
Sounds much like now, in fact.
But we really can, and must, change that.
It is better to have no police than to have bad police. But we don’t actually have to settle for either of those.
We could have good police.
