Get this party started (Ooh)
Get this party started
Get this party started right now

The second best time to start a new opposition party is always now.

The worst time is later.

I wrote earlier this week about the United States’ need for a genuine opposition party and some ideas for how to manage the platform of a single-issue opposition party.

One big problem with starting a new political party, of course, is that we’ve already had a year of … all this … with no meaningful opposition. By waiting for the Democrats to step up, that whole year was essentially wasted.

And, frankly, by waiting for the Democrats to actually prepare to be an opposition, the last five years have been wasted as well.

That’s time we’ll never get back.

But it’s still worth the effort, even now.

There is still going to be a mid-term election this fall, and a Presidential election in 2028.

These elections will happen.

The situation will be worse by then, of course, but time will not stop moving forward just because fascists have taken over the U.S. government.

And having actual opposition candidates in those elections would be better than not having them.

And an opposition party is more than just a political party.

It’s a body that’s preparing options and organizing for what comes after the coup is put down.

Someone needs to write the Constitutional amendments that we’ll need to stop this happening again, or prepare a new Constitution if amending the current one isn’t doable.

Opposing the coup doesn’t end at stopping the pillaging of the State and arresting their roving thugs.

It needs to include preparing for what comes after.

When the U.S. will either be repaired or dissolved.

So even if it’s late, maybe even too late to make any electoral difference, we’re still going to need a new political party to do the job that the Democrats should have been doing all along.

Because the opposition’s work doesn’t end at the next election.
