The New York Times and USA Today are both flying trial balloons for a possible Kamala Harris re-run for the Presidency.
No. Just, no.
Harris was a bad candidate to take on Trump in 2024, for a lot of reasons:
- as the Vice President, she shares directly in the responsibility for the Biden administration’s abject failure to deal with the January 6th insurrection attempt
- that failure laid the grounds for the current and ongoing coup
- she spent several months decrying the existential threat of a possible Trump victory, then disappeared completely when that threat actually manifested
That list could go on.
Seriously, I could spend days coming up with examples.
She was also already a bad candidate just in general, for a lot more reasons:
- she’s an institutional party Democrat
- she’s widely perceived as being opposed to addressing police corruption
- her stance on Israel’s genocidal treatment of Palestinians is weak sauce and probably cost her the Presidency once already
That list could go on too.
And on, and on, and on.
Harris is not a desirable Presidential candidate in general; the United States has never needed yet another careerist Democrat politician running for President. That’s not something that we’ve ever had a shortage of.
But she would be a terrible candidate for this moment.
As one of the actual people who created this situation, she is one on the last people we need in the next Presidential election.
The institutionalist Democrats have had their chance.
They failed to deal with this situation when they had the Presidency already.
Their time has been and gone.
