I pointed this out back in February:
This is America; we don’t do royalty.
It’s really very basic civics.
You literally cannot get more un-American than caring about the King or Queen of England.
But trying to be a King of America comes a very close second.
And, from the Oval Office to the halls of Congress to the chambers of the Supreme Court we seem to be surrounded by the most un-American crowd of ignorant authoritarians since the Business Plot tried to to overthrow then-President Roosevelt and install retired Marine general Smedley Butler as a dictator.
Yes, for y’all who haven’t been paying attention to history, the U.S. has been down this particular dead-end road before.
It didn’t work then.
And it’s our task to see that it doesn’t work this time either.
Fortunately, we have Schoolhouse Rock on our side.
I rarely recommend protests or events here, since I think they are generally ineffective at dealing with issues of actual power and abusers of power; protests only work when they are the peaceful face of an actually-threatening violent movement. But shows of mass alignment can be a prelude to and inspiration for actually effective direct action and opposition.
So, get yourself off to the search engine of your choice and search for no kings and a city or town near you.
As many, oh so mind-numbingly many, people have written this spring: if you’ve ever wondered what you’d have been doing in 1930s Germany, you just have to look at what you’re doing right now.
It’s become a cliche, but it’s still true.
